If you have friends or family members who have moved into a new home this summer, you may be thinking about a seasonal housewarming gift to celebrate the occasion.

When I think about summer, it’s always about the outdoors, so there are many options. Think gardening, outdoor décor or entertaining. Here are a few ideas that might be perfect for a summer-themed gift:

For the Garden

Garden tools and a colorful watering can.  Garden tool sets in a handy canvas tote are easy to carry and store. Watering cans now come in every shape, size, and style from basic galvanized steel, copper and in shiny bright colors. Add fresh flowers to the watering can and give as an outdoor vase.

A garden trellis. Trellises can be found in various architectural styles and are easily planted into the ground to support beautiful climbing flowers.

A set of herb plants in a planter or pots. Put herb plants in attractive little pots or in a rectangular planter. They can be kept indoors or replanted outside.

A birdhouse or feeder. A birdhouse can be purely decorative or suited to the birds most common to your area.

Outdoor deck storage and seating. Many attractive storage “boxes” now double as extra seating.

String Lighting. Little white lights sparkle like stars on a summer night. They now come in many more styles including vintage Edison bulbs, paper lanterns, globes, little Mason Jars and café lights with little shades. Choose LEDs or solar powered.

Wind chimes. Available in many styles, listen to the different sounds made by wind chimes in metal, bamboo and colorful capiz shells. Choose what appeals to you most.

Whimsical statuary in fun fauna figures add a lighthearted touch to the garden or patio.

Small fountains for a side table or corner add a “babbling brook” sound to add to the soundscape.

Fire pits now come in many sizes and prices. You’ll find them in materials like ceramic tile, iron, stone and often with decorative screen covers.

Colored trays with handles for easy carrying and serving outdoors are always useful.

Lantern candles in styles from minimalist glass to arts and crafts to beautiful Moroccan-style with intricate metalwork patterns in white or copper.

Long-stemmed wine glasses in a variety of jewel tone colors add glamour to any outdoor party

Set of colorful plates and linen napkins. Dinnerware now comes in styles and patterns that look like ceramic but weigh less.

Sparkling wines are always refreshing on a summer night. Put a boxed set together. Think Prosecco, champagne or my favorite—anything from the Vinho Verde region of Portugal.
