Backyard Summer Game Ideas

Take advantage of the extra daylight and cooler evening weather while you can and play some backyard games with family and friends! Or, if taking it easy is your goal, venture outside to relax and enjoy the fresh evening air. Here are a few ideas to get the ball rolling.

Bocce Ball. Also known as lawn bowling, this game is traditionally played on a natural soil or asphalt court, but it can easily be scaled down to fit in most backyards. The natural imperfections of the grass will make it a fun – if unpredictable – game to play with teams of two to four people.

Croquet. Instead of getting in the car and driving to a miniature golf course with the family, why not buy a croquet set – mallets, balls and wickets – and enjoy this easy-to-play mini-golf-like game on your own backyard course, just like many of us did when we were kids.

Cornhole. Also known as bean-bag toss, cornhole started in the Midwest and became a fixture at pre-game tailgating gatherings, but in recent years, it has gained popularity across the country. Equipment is minimal: All you need are some bean bags and a raised platform with a hole in the far end.

Badminton. You don’t need any experience to enjoy this classic backyard game. Just set up the net, grab your racket and “birdies” and let the games begin! You can play with as few as two people or a larger group.

Hammock time. Create your own backyard retreat by putting up a hammock, so you’ll have a tranquil spot to unwind after a busy day at work. Hammock styles and materials are wide ranging, from classic rope styles to the fabric and quilted variety.

Add a fountain. The soothing sound of trickling water from a decorative fountain will add beauty and tranquility to your outdoor living space, providing a peaceful respite from the world and a relaxing spot to put your feet up.
